Doug Ray was identified on June 23, 2003 at Manta Heaven and about 8-10 feet wide. He is not a “regular” at the manta experience, but he is one extraordinary manta.
Doug Ray has shown us how manta rays can regenerate flesh to heal a wound. In 2006 he came to the dive sight with a 12×8 inch section of his flank missing. The flesh grew back and almost completely replaced the area that was gone. Doug also has a permanent hook very close to his right eye. We do not think it has affected his vision.
DESCRIPTION OF MARKINGS
Doug Ray is easily identified by the hook in his right eye and the scarring on his back left side. His spot pattern resembles three long strokes that come together at the base of his gill slits.
