Pu’uwai Ray was identified by Martina Wing in Kauna’oa Bay on July 13, 2017. He was a pup with 3 feet but grew already to 5 feet.
The name was suggested by Alex Alexander’s daughters Maya and Anja, who were with Martina when Pu’uwai was seen for the first time. Choosing this name was based on a fun contest with our social media followers where we received over 50 submissions. Pu’uwai means “Heart” in Hawaiian. Martina decided to choose this name because the mantas often have a profound impact on the people that join the manta experience. Being in their presence simply touches people’s hearts. She also appreciated the heartfelt submissions from everyone who suggested a name.
